The Italian driving theory test, explained in English

The theory exam for the Italian car licence (Patente B) is a short true/false quiz, but it is only in Italian. If you are learning Italian, the hard part is not the rules: it is reading the exact Italian wording under time pressure. Here is how the exam works and how to prepare for it in English.

Try 3 questions

Exam format

30 statements, each answered VERO (true) or FALSO (false), in 20 minutes. You pass with at most 3 errors; an unanswered statement counts as an error.

Statements are drawn from the official Ministry list of about 7,000 statements. In that list VERO and FALSO are almost exactly half and half, so guessing a pattern does not help.

Many statements come with a figure: a road sign, a junction drawing or a dashboard light. Read the figure first, then the sentence.

Can I take it in English?

No: the statements are in Italian, so prepare for the Italian version. The good news: the exam uses a limited vocabulary that repeats across thousands of statements, so you can learn it.

A study method that works

1. Learn one topic at a time in your language (signs, priority, speed limits, stopping distance…).

2. Then answer the official Italian statements of that topic, tapping the words you do not know.

3. For every mistake, find the one Italian word that decided the answer (for example solo, sempre, non) and repeat it later.

4. In the last weeks, do full 30-statement simulations in Italian only, with the 20-minute timer.
